Ufa State Petroleum Technological University (USPTU) is a leading technical university in Russia, a flagship university of Russia and a flagship university of Gazprom. In 2018, USPTU celebrated its 70'th anniversary.
The university was founded in October, 1948 on the basis of a branch of Gubkin Moscow Petroleum Institute in Ufa. Its rapid development, the construction of new buildings and the opening of new specialties were driven by the growth of the oil industry in the west of Bashkiria and in Tatarstan. By the mid-1960’s, the Ufa Petroleum Institute had turned into a ramified educational structure, providing qualified specialists for oil production and refining in the Ural-Volga region. With the emergence of a new oil-producing region in West Siberia, the number of students at Ufa Petroleum Institute has increased significantly. By the beginning of the 1980’s, the institute developed into a state-wide educational and scientific complex by obtaining features of a technical university. In 1994, the institution officially received the status of a university. In 2016, after being joined by Ufa State University of Economics and Service, USPTU gained the status of a flagship university of Russia, followed by the status of a flagship university of PJSC Gazprom. Over the years, USPTU has trained more than 115,000 highly-qualified professionals for all branches of the fuel and energy, oil- and gas- producing and construction industries in Russia. The university has been successfully integrated into the system of international higher education. Since 1996, it has been a full member of the International Association of Universities (UIA). The representatives of 70 subjects of the Russian Federation and citizens of 52 foreign countries (Kazakhstan, Cuba, Vietnam, China, Tajikistan, etc.) study at the university. These are the students of the pre-university preparatory course (Russian Language program), Specialist’s/Engineer’s, Bachelor’s and Master’s programs, as well as postgraduate and doctoral students. The university is successfully developing its international activities, expanding the scope of international cooperation in the fields of scientific and technical developments, carrying out an active exchange of students and teachers within the framework of the academic mobility program, as well as implementing a large range of training and retraining programs for foreign specialists.
Today the University comprises 4 Faculties, 5 Institutes, the Pre-University Education Center, Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Doctoral Departments (with 7 Dissertation Defense Boards operating), the Institute of Additional Professional Education, the Engineering Center and the Youth Technopark. USPTU has three branches in the cities of Oktyabrsky, Salavat and Sterlitamak.
Nearly 21,000 students are being trained in a full range of specialties. Their training is carried out by highly-qualified teaching staff in all courses of the educational programs: including approximately 1,400 full-time teachers, more than 240 Doctors of Sciences, Professors and more than 800 Candidates of Sciences, Associate Professors.
Close attention is being paid to the development of science. In terms of research volume, USPTU has the highest rates in the Volga Federal District. Scientific schools are actively developing, taking pride in their famous scientists including full members and corresponding members of the Academy of Sciences of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Bashkortostan, honored workers of education, science, engineering, construction and architecture.
An effective system of job placement for graduates has been developed and is successfully functioning at USPTU. Since 1998, USPTU has had direct cooperation agreements in the field of educational services and research concluded with international universities, research centers and oil companies. The demand for young professionals – USPTU graduates -- exceeds the supply. Contracts for professionals’ targeted training and retraining are continuously concluded with major companies and organizations in the fuel and energy sector, such as LUKOIL, TATNEFT, GazpromNeft, SIBUR, Halliburton, Schlumberger, Baker Hughes and others. Special attention is being paid to the programs implemented jointly with state companies Rosneft, Gazprom, and Transneft.
The university’s physical facilities are an integral part of, and the basis for, its development. The history of the Institute and the University tracks closely with the history of construction and expansion of training and amenity facilities, as well as constant modernization of teaching, laboratory and research equipment. The starting points for this grand enterprise were two small dilapidated buildings, adapted for training in 1948. Today the university possesses, in addition to its three branches in the regions of Bashkortostan, three compactly-designed training and amenity buildings, including all services, with a total area of about 195 thousand m2.There is a health care center, a student polyclinic with a full set of modern medical offices, a cultural and household complex, a family hostel, a sport and recreation camp, a sports complex with the most modern facilities and equipment, three canteens, as well as the Youth Palace, where students can engage in different clubs and develop their talents. The high level of the university’s dance and theater groups is being constantly confirmed by prizes gained in the Republican and national contests.
Thus, USPTU is a strong, well-resourced university adapted to modern conditions, training specialists in a wide range of fields.
